Life Transitions Therapy in Bristol
Adjusting to life changes and health conditions with a Clinical Psychologist
Life Transitions Therapy in Bristol
Big changes can shake your sense of self — even when you thought you were ready for them.
Whether it’s starting a new chapter, adjusting after illness, moving careers, ending a relationship, or navigating a shift in identity, transitions can feel unsettling, confusing, or even overwhelming. Most people describe them as a mix of loss and possibility — but it can be hard to know how to find solid ground again.
In life transitions, the challenge isn’t just managing discomfort — it’s integrating the meaning of change into your sense of self.

You might be here if…
You’re navigating a significant life transition — a change in career, direction, or long-held goals — and feeling more unsettled than you expected.
Your relationships have broken down, shifted, or ended, and you’re trying to adjust to a new sense of normal.
You’re adapting to life as a parent and the emotional, practical, and identity changes this brings.
You’re moving through the grief of losing someone important to you, or searching for support with bereavement.
You’ve experienced a health diagnosis or physical condition that has changed how you see yourself and your future.
You’re living with a quieter, harder-to-name loss — of identity, independence, certainty, hopes, or aspects of your body or functioning.
If you recognise yourself in any of these, life transitions therapy can offer a space to process change, rebuild steadiness, and reconnect with what matters to you.
What to expect
Change can feel hard. When something significant shifts, our usual ways of understanding the world and ourselves become less reliable. Research on adjustment — including models like Brennan’s Adjustment Model — shows that change often requires a psychological reorientation: we need to make sense of what was, understand what is, and gradually redefine who we are now.
What’s more, we can sometimes have expectations about how we feel we should be coping with change. We might expect we should be ‘over it’ by now, or that we shouldn’t experience the emotions we do. This might be our mind trying to help, but this can often add extra weight to the distress we are already carrying.
Adjusting to change and health conditions isn’t linear and it isn’t quick. It’s real psychological work — not just “getting over it.” Change influences how we think about ourselves, our roles, our hopes, and our routines. Feeling lost, anxious, or uncertain is understandable and human.
In transitions therapy, we:
Explore what the change means to you personally
Understand your emotional and practical responses
Work with both loss and potential growth
Build clarity about who you want to be next
Rather than rushing acceptance, we create space to reflect, feel, and respond from your values.
